That was it, the note in its entirety. All the same, the word was heavy, as if it’d sucked all the air out of the room. The single syllable was both a threat and a promise, squarely in the center of the empty white space.

Scarlett, who’d peeked over his shoulder to read, now turned to Luke, unable to keep her flippant expression any longer. “Okay … now I’m worried.”

Luke’s chest tightened at the look on Scarlett’s beautiful face. It was obvious she’d been trying to hide her fear all this time, but to finally see it outright on her upset him. She doesn’t deserve this.

He quickly shook off the thought as he walked once more through the cottage. No one deserved it, of course, but he was dangerously close to making this personal. Luke could not, under any circumstances, have anything more than a professional relationship with Scarlett. She was his client, nothing more.

I need to see Dad. Luke would bring him the letter and they could call the police, as well as put one of their guys on the house for the night.

But when he walked out of the empty bedroom to see her sitting on the couch, face buried in her hands and shoulders tense with worry, his resolve faded. I can’t leave her here. The basic need to simply protect her was all he could think about, and against his better judgment, he made a split-second decision.

“Pack your things,” he said. “I’m taking you somewhere else, someplace safe where this guy can’t get to you.”

Scarlett glanced up, puzzled. “Where?”

Luke sighed. Dad’s gonna kill me. “Home.”
